Flag of United States Minor Outlying Islands
This is the flag of the United States, used for the islands. It has thirteen horizontal stripes of red and white and a blue canton with fifty white stars.
What the flag means
The thirteen stripes are the thirteen British colonies that won independence in the American Revolutionary War. The fifty stars are the fifty states.
History
The United States Minor Outlying Islands are a statistical grouping in ISO 3166, not an administrative unit, and have no flag of their own. They are Baker, Howland and Jarvis islands, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Atoll, Palmyra Atoll, Wake Island and Navassa Island in the Caribbean. None has known permanent residents. The 50-star flag took effect on 4 July 1960 under Executive Order 10834.
14 June is Flag Day in the United States, marking the Flag Resolution adopted on that date in 1777.
