Flag of Sint Maarten
Two horizontal bands, red over blue, with a white triangle at the hoist. On the triangle is the coat of arms: a shield showing the courthouse in Philipsburg, with a pelican in front of a yellow sun above.
What the flag means
Blue is the sea and sky and red the blood of the people of Sint Maarten. The shield also shows the monument marking the border with the French side of the island. The motto, Semper progrediens, means 'always progressing'.
History
The coat of arms was granted in November 1982, and a design contest followed in August 1983. The government adopted Roselle Richardson's winning design on 13 June 1985, while Sint Maarten was part of the Netherlands Antilles. It has been the only flag used in the country since the Antilles were dissolved on 10 October 2010.
Its layout of a white hoist triangle with red over blue is the same as the war flag of the Philippines.
